President Piero Gattoni elected to lead EBA, the European Biogas Association

Piero Gattoni, President of the CIB – Consorzio Italiano Biogas, has been elected as the new President of the EBA – European Biogas Association, the organisation representing the entire biogas and biomethane chain at European level. Gattoni is the first Italian to hold this prestigious position and will lead the association in a crucial phase for the European energy transition. At the same time, representing the industries of the sector, Michael Niederbacher, founder and CEO of TerraX and Bihcon, CIB member companies, was elected Vice President of EBA.

“I would like to thank the EBA Assembly for this important recognition and for the trust it has placed in me. The work carried out by the CIB over the years in Europe has contributed to building an increasingly solid and concrete European dialogue, bringing the Biogasfattobene model to be recognised as a best practice at international level,” commented President Gattoni.

According to the latest Statistical Report published by EBA, in 2023 the combined production of biogas and biomethane in Europe will reach 22 billion cubic metres, covering 7% of the European Union’s natural gas consumption. These figures confirm the increasingly strategic role of these renewable sources for the decarbonisation of the economy and European energy independence.

“Europe is called upon to face complex challenges in a context still marked by strong geopolitical uncertainties,” Gattoni continues. “In this scenario, in the coming years we must work towards a path that salvages what has been good so far thanks to the Green Deal – demonstrating that a new paradigm is possible – and that better defines the tools that will lead our industry to actively contribute to a change of pace – putting the competitiveness of our companies and security of supply at the centre. Clear and easily enforceable guidelines are the way to increase the ability of individual states to achieve decarbonisation targets. Thanks to the work carried out by EBA in recent years, biogas and biomethane are now at the heart of European energy policies, but we need to accelerate the growth of biomethane produced in the EU, as well as the implementation of new production capacity. This is why I hope, in this crucial phase, for an open, constructive and constant confrontation between European policy makers and all the representatives of our supply chain, to allow the sector to express its full potential, which Europe needs in order to achieve its energy security and decarbonisation objectives,’ concludes EBA’s new President, Piero Gattoni.
